The traffic light speaks “Thank you. It will turn green momentarily”

The city of Marl (North Rhine-Westphalia) installed “speaking” traffic lights, Crossguide EK 533 signal requesting equipment made by Langmatz, at two street junctions. This caused a real media hype in the city. Many local and national radio and television stations reported on site about the traffic lights…

The background of the media hype was a pilot project of the city of Marl. Two Langmatz signal requesting units were installed in front of the St. Barbara kindergarten in Marl-Hamm and in front of the Marien hospital at the Hervester street. The new signalling units announce the green phase to pedestrians with friendly words in a child’s voice “Thank you. It will turn green momentarily”. This provides additional help for the visually impaired in safely crossing the street, besides the default clearance tone and vibration push button.

The friendly voice announcement motivates children and adults to use the traffic light frequently and with delight and thus, to avoid crossing the street on red.
The city of Marl understands this measure as a contribution to higher road safety and is planning to install 10 additional traffic lights with this new function in the near future. For this purpose, Langmatz Crossguide EK 533 signal requesting units are used. In addition to many other functions for pedestrians and the visually impaired , voice announcements can be individually entered.

The press release of the city of Marl about the two “speaking” traffic lights was answered not only by the local “Marler Zeitung” newspaper and the local press from Westphalian Münster to the Ruhr District, but also by BILD-Zeitung and the German Press Agency (dpa), whose report and video feature were e.g. also published by n24.de and Süddeutsche Zeitung.
Television and radio visited on site. Radio Vest, Radio Emscher Lippe, WDR and the WDR children’s radio channel broadcast detailed radio features. Television was represented by RTL West, Sat1 NRW and ZDF.
