Manhole covers

Positioning of manholes and covers

Fundamentally, the covers must be fitted in a position exposed to the least traffic, and should

avoid being driven directly over.

General planning information

When planning the positioning of manholes and covers on the carriageway, particular attention needs to be paid to

driving comfort, safety, and the durability of the infrastructure. There are specific recommendations for this:

    1. 1. Avoidance of positioning within the carriageway:
    2. Manholes and covers should preferably be positioned outside of the main carriageway in order to minimise
  1. unevenness and vibrations for vehicles. Unevenness can have a negative impact on driving comfort and traffic
    1. safety, particularly at high speeds or when there are high volumes of traffic.
    2.
  2. 2. Positioning in the edge zone:
  3. We recommend positioning at the edge of the carriageway or on the hard shoulder where there are fewer
  4. vehicles. This reduces unevenness and wear from the covers being run over, reducing maintenance costs but
  5. also minimising noise pollution.
  6.
  7. 3. Consideration of positioning at some distance from crossroads and T-junctions:
  8. Manholes should not be located directly adjacent to crossroads and T-junctions, as vehicles frequently
  9. brake here, creating higher loading and thus greater wear.
  10.
  11. 4. Even distribution and flush installation:
  12. If manholes unavoidably have to be located within the carriageway, then they should be distributed evenly and
  13. symmetrically, and installed flush with the surface of the carriageway. Flush installation avoids trip hazards and
  14. prevents noise emissions..
  15.
  16. 5. Consideration of load classes and materials:
  17. Materials and cover designs should correspond to the expected volumes of traffic. Reinforced covers therefore
  18. might be needed in busy areas to avoid long-term damage.

These measures can be used to make the road infrastructure more hard-wearing and improve driving comfort. Careful

planning therefore contributes significantly to traffic safety and reducing maintenance costs. Check out our website for
