Manhole covers and load classes – DIN EN 124
The requirements governing manhole covers and gully tops for vehicular and pedestrian areas are regulated in DIN EN 124 / EN 124-1:2015. This sub-divides covers into load classes A15 to F900 and defines areas of application (pedestrian zones, areas where vehicles have access, heavy industry).
Langmatz QaBo polycarbonate manholes are designed for load class D400 and have been tested as a complete system (body + frame + cover). They thus meet the requirements for roadways, car parks, and vehicular areas.
Classification according to areas of use and DINÂ ENÂ 124
A 15 – 15 kN test load Areas used exclusively by pedestrians and bicycles, and similar surfaces, e.g. green spaces (Group 1)
B 125 – 125 kN test load Pavements, pedestrian areas, and similar surfaces, car parks and parking decks (Group 2)
C250 – 250 kN test load Parking spaces, shoulders, and gutter areas, extending a maximum of 0.5 m into the roadway from the curb edge and a maximum of 0.2 m into the sidewalk (Group 3)
D 400 – 400 kN test load Road carriageways (including pedestrian streets), parking areas, and similar permanent traffic surfaces, e.g. AOD parking areas (Group 4) |
Locking mechanism
Manhole covers with load class D400 must always be screwed down, locked, or secured by a surface-re lated mass in accordance with DINÂ ENÂ 124.
European Technical Assessment – ETA and EEAS
Langmatz QaBo polycarbonate manholes carry a European Technical Assessment (ETA 18/0734 for PC) based on a European Assessment Document (EAD), confirmed by the European Organisation for Technical Assessment (EOTA).
Key points:
- Proof of load-bearing strength in different load scenarios
- Testing of resistance to horizontal forces (e.g. brake loads on the cover)
- Durability tests (environmental influences, UV, temperature, fire behaviour, chemicals)
- Overall assessment of the manhole body and cover in accordance with DIN EN 124, load class D400
- CE marking and associated Declaration of Performance
This provides systemic proof for the complete manhole system, and not just for the cover.
